The first trailer drives that idea home – the voice-over describes increasing natural disasters and shows a giant storm ravaging a city while Joanna watches. Microsoft described the upcoming Perfect Dark as an “eco sci-fi” tale set in the near future. (Image credit: The Initiative ) What is the perfect Dark story? Crystal Dynamics was acquired by Embracer Group from Square Enix in 2022, but has since confirmed that it will continue working on the new Perfect Dark in a co-developer capacity. In a statement, The Initiative drew attention to the "world class team behind character-driven games such as Tomb Raider" which will help it "to bring this first-person spy thriller to a new generation". ![]() In 2021, Microsoft announced that The Initiative was partnering with Crystal Dynamics to complete development of the Perfect Dark reboot. Rumors have circulated for a number of years that The Initiative has struggled to retain staff, as development of Perfect Dark became more complex, although Gallagher later told VGC: "It's no small task to build a studio and reinvent a beloved franchise… In this journey, it's not uncommon for there to be staffing changes, especially during a time of global upheaval over the last two years, and there's plenty more work in front of us to deliver a fantastic Perfect Dark experience to our players." The Initiative was founded in 2018 and headed up by Darrell Gallagher – who played a key role in the 2013 revival of Tomb Raider with Crystal Dynamics. It is even considered to be the game that started the decline of Rare from a once loved company.Microsoft is in no rush to get this Perfect Dark reboot out into the world – it'll be released when it's ready. While Perfect Dark Zero received mixed to positive reviews from game publications at release, fans of the original and gamers were heavily disappointed and panned the game. As said above, some of the music is good, even though some of it is forgettable. The bots in multiplayer have names that reference other Rare games.Despite the average multiplayer, there are some good modes. Some of the weapons from the original make a return, like the Laptop Gun.It's one of the first online multiplayer games to support up to 32 players.Limited multiplayer character selection.Forgettable characters with no depth whatsoever. The bosses are extremely easy, since you can just shoot them to death, especially the final boss.Average and boring multiplayer that removes everything that made the multiplayer in games such as Halo fun.The loadout changing mechanic, while unique, becomes pointless quickly. There's a pointless minigame you must play to even use a gadget!.Strange product placements, such as Joanna using a Samsung tablet as a gadget.Horrible intro with bad effects, and it's trying to be a James Bond-esque intro but it fails horribly. While some of the music is good, there are some forgettable tracks. The game literally shows you where to go if you get lost, discouraging any exploration.Even though they go by quickly, most of these loading screens load a cutscene with more story content that no one cares about. ![]() The mission briefings have boring, uninteresting dialogue.Even Star Fox Adventures, a GameCube title that was release three years prior and also developed by Rare, had much better looking graphics and animations than this. Lackluster graphics, even for Xbox 360 launch title standards there are also lots of ugly filters and poor animations. She also speaks with an American accent, despite talking British throughout the first game (sure she was born in Atlanta Georgia but that still doesn't explain how she started talking British all of a sudden).Joanna is no longer an interesting female protagonist as she is dumbed down to having a dull personality and her redesign makes her look more like a Kim Possible Cosplayer.Sometimes, the levels can feel extremely empty. Compared to the original game, this has linear hallway like level design and no exploration.Stiff controls that feel like they were taken from a GameCube controller, making Joanna control like a tank. The plot has little to no build up and feels poorly written and bland, especially compared to the previous game.Troubled development: It was originally in development for the Nintendo GameCube, but after Rare was purchased by Microsoft, it was later switched to the original Xbox, but then got rushed to the Xbox 360 at the last minute, resulting in many planned features being scrapped.
